I've just got to say I'm a huge fan of the method described in this article.
If you have to store recursive structures in a DB its the way to go.

Its a bit tricky getting your head around it if you're used to the
Id/parentId method, but once you get it set up your SELECT's will be much,
much faster and your UPDATES/INSERTS will only be slightly more painful.
