ok thanks for that Gary. Tables aren't particularly great but I guess they will 
suffice until something better comes along...

If what you are laying out is a grid/table then use a table.  That is
still considered by CSS purist's to be a valid (and semantically
correct) best practice.

What CSS best practice is against is using tables (especially lots of
nested tables) to layout non-tabular data.
