usually just want to layout my content variables in a
grid like fashion using CSS is painfully slow...

If what you are laying out is a grid/table then use a table. That is still considered by CSS purist's to be a valid (and semantically correct) best practice.

What CSS best practice is against is using tables (especially lots of
nested tables) to layout non-tabular data.


The mental test I find best to determine whether a table is appropriate: are there rows and columns, and do they mean something? If so, then that's what tables are for, so use 'em.
