"that's totally unneeded" That's an assumption not a fact. It may be unneeded to you, however I feel it is a nice way to initialize the variables.

If it's a query object var it as such, if it is a string I var it as such, if it is a numeric value I var it as such. That's all there is to it.

I know CF is not strict in that since but, it is a nice practice and allows for easier maintenance of code.

p.s. I use it extensively and have no performance issues at all on some fairly large applications.
