if by 'special characters' you mean 'french', why not just store them as they are? you can use iso-8859-1 or utf-8 encoding. these days even mysql (4.1) handles unicode. how will you search for these html entities? how will you sort? storing perfectly acceptable chars as html entities isn't such a good idea.
