I'm working on a good sized ecommerce application that deals with mostly imported (French) products. One problem I ran into was how to store all the special characters in my DB (MySQL), yet still be able
if by 'special characters' you mean 'french', why not just store them as they are? you can use iso-8859-1 or utf-8 encoding. these days even mysql (4.1) handles unicode. how will you search for these html entities? how will you sort? storing perfectly acceptable chars as html entities isn't such a good idea.
