I've built very complex applications with Transfer.

Well, that's just a matter of experience and familiarity. Once you are
familiar with Transfer, it's pretty easy to find where the error is in
your own code (because it's always your own code!).

Hibernate is even more complex than Transfer so if you think it'll be
easier to work with, I think you're in for a big shock. ORMs have a
learning curve and they do tend to be big, complex beasties -
especially if they are able to handle all sorts of complex systems.
Hibernate has books written about it that are many hundreds of pages
thick. It's a very powerful system.
