I installed from the ubuntu-7.10-dvd-i386.iso for which there is only one variant (no alternative). The 'text mode install' is part of its boot menu.

below the drop-down box where you pick the mirror to download from there is a check-box for the "alternative" ISO

That'll get you the ISO CD, I'm talking about the DVD, a 4.23 Gb download.

Yep the Ubuntu DVDs usually contain both installer modes.

BTW, to upgrade my Ubuntu boxes and VM I just edited /etc/apt/sources.list and then ran

        sudo apt-get update
        sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and let it run. No need to download media unless you want to do fresh installs, have bandwidth limitations, or have to upgrade a bunch of them.

I'm using VMware Fusion and had no problems with getting the vmware-tools running in Gutsy once I got the right kernel package installed that matched the kernel sources package. I just reran the tools config script and it built new kernel modules for me.
