Thomas Snyder, a fellow from Palo Alto, recently won the World Sudoku Championship in India.

The video interview there is nice. One of the puzzles was:

   Goa
0 0 0 0 0 0 4 6 0
0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 9
0 8 4 0 0 7 0 0 1
2 0 0 0 0 0 7 1 0
5 0 3 8 0 0 0 0 0
9 0 0 1 0 0 5 3 0
0 2 5 0 0 8 0 0 6
0 0 0 0 0 2 9 8 5
0 0 0 0 0 5 0 0 7

Using Roger's sudoku verb -

   timex 'sudoku Goa'
0.00210184 25792

Now 2 milliseconds is a lot faster than the Champ - but I'm very impressed that he could do it in 2 minutes and 26 seconds. In the video, Thomas points out that computer generated puzzles tend to have less charm than "hand set" ones - e.g. in the case of puzzle Gao (which is the city in India where the competition was held), so named because of the pattern -

   ' *'{~*Goa
      **
     *  *
 **  *  *
*     **

*  *  **
 **  *  *
     ****
