Ok, I think I see what you are getting at. In other words, you are talking of non-application specific languages for the extension of applications programs, not system program. (Please see http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Difference_between_system_program_and_application_program if my wording is not clear.) If you were merely speaking of API support, I might have started suggesting DCL as an example predating 1980. Your suggestion that floating point arithmetic support is crucial to this context reinforces my opinion. (Since floating point support rarely finds use in systems programming contexts.) And of course I have no disagreement with your original assertions if my above understanding is accurate.
