In APL\360 the only way for a program to "gather data" from an 
outside source was via the (selectric typewriter) terminal the user 
was working at - and if a program wanted to "request input" the quad 
symbol was used to open a prompt that let the user type in numbers or 
an expression. If the program wanted a literal string/vector, the 
quad symbol overstruck with a quote was available (not requiring the 
user to quote the string) - hence Quote Quad was used for literal 
input.
