While I could not find a way to use gmail filter to accomplish my
goal, I discovered another gmail setting that does give me the desired
feedback; now if I am just alert for that feedback. Gmail puts ">>"
(as one character) in front of any "conversation" that contains a
message directly to me and not from a mailing list. If I just look for
this character, at least the first time such a message occurs in a
conversation, I will be informed of offline messages; any future
offline messages in the same thread would not produce a distinct
alert, afaik.

The filters won't work because all of the messages from the mailing
list are treated as if they are addressed to me, from a filter
perpective.
