      I've heard of so many different results from cutting coils, that I
don't believe that there is a single definitive answer.   I've heard of 2
people cutting similar springs, the same amount, and getting different
results.    If you want to try, I would do no more than 1/4 coil at a
time.  It may be a pain, but you stand less chance of overshooting your
mark, or ending up with a harsh ride that bottoms out on every speed
bump.
