Sounds like the battery is simply beat and not holding a charge.  I converted 
from the external to the internal style regulator on my 70.  I do have a 300 
watt amp no a/c.  Car always fires right up.  I have one of those AC Delco 
batteries with a 6 year warranty.  The only thing that will kill the battery 
is leaving the radio on while the car is not running.  You could run dual 
batteries and dual altenators.  My dad did this on his 78 GMC.  One battery 
runs the truck while the other runs the winch, plow, and radio.  One 
altenator chargers the power to the truck, while the other charges the 
accessory battery independently.  The starter is not getting the dreaded heat 
soak is it??
