Casting dates would tell the story on some of these engines wouldn't it?

You know, the reason you state makes sense. I think the story I heard 30 or
so
years ago about blocks with bores too big to meet spec was probably the
invention of one of my motorhead friends in high school. The emission
standard
being lower for engines over 400ci is probably the truth. Boring .030 over
certainly would have been cheaper than retooling.
BTW I had a 71 Monte Carlo about 15 years ago with a 4 bbl version of the
402.
It had a Turbo 400 and a 12 bolt rear with 2.73 gears. I sold it because it
didn't have A/C and I live in Florida. It would have made a nice Power Tour
car.
All I would have had to do is call Vintage Air.....but it's gone.
