Yes, I checked and have spark on all but did not notice if there were any 
misses while I was doing it, strictly looking for a dead wire at that point. 
I will check more on that tomorrow.

The Mallory is not a vacuum unit, centrifical advance is the term I believe.

Might be some merit in that one....It is a VERY intermitent knock. Shortly 
after I first bought the car the starter began slipping off the flywheel 
occassionally. I thought the worst but it turned out to be a missing 
flywheel bolt letting it flex just enough to skip off.
