I've done that too, but you're likely to rip up the sheet metal, and limit
your options as to what else you can do. Try the old-style ring-type filter
wrench all the way at the base of the filter first. Those ratchet type
wrenches cause the sheet metal to twist & crumple. The screwdriver method
does work, but as mentioned should be used as a last resort.

Worst case scenario, and if you can fit, drive a big screwdriver through the
filter body and turn. It'll break loose.
