Hi list, I'm getting ready to strip/paint my 72 Malibu myself and I thought
I would ask everyone for some tips/tricks. I'm planning on sandblasting the
whole car and then fixing the dents and holes then shooting on the paint.
All I have to go on is my Haynes Body Repair & Painting Manual, so every tip
is appreciated. Here are a few specific questions I have:
1) Moldings...I was really surprised at how expensive new molding is...so
are there any tricks to straightening my window molding? Also, any tricks
on how to remove the edge molding with the least amount of damage?
2) Do I have these steps in the right order?
-Sandblast
-Hammer/dolly dents
-Weld holes/cracks/replacement-panels
-Clean
-Condition the metal
-Conversion coat (is this needed?)
-Body filler to fix holes/dents
-Primer-seal
-Wet-sand
-Color
-Clear coat (is this needed?)
3) What kind of paint system would you recommend for a do-it-yourselfer?
(acrylic lacquer, acrylic enamel, polyurethane, acrylic urethane enamel)
Also related, what kind of sprayer would you recommend? (standard, HVLP,
gravity, suction, pressure, ???)
