David,       Not sure if you are aware of this, but the HEI distributor caps have a different type of terminal on them.  So in order to run the HEI you will also need to make some changes to the spark plug wires.  The HEI  has a "male" terminal, while the points type (which you have) has a "female" terminal.  For more detailed information, you should check out  www.chevelles.com , do a search for HEI conversion.     As far as the transmission, if it is a 3 speed automatic, and the car is not an original BB car, then it is likely a TH350 (or Turbo Hydromatic 350).    Kent '68 Malibu ZZ502/502 :)
