Open the distributor cap and note the way that the rotor is pointing. Make a mark so that you can make sure that the rotor of the HEI is pointing at the same mark when it is installed. Also as you remove the old distributor, watch the rotor. It will rotate slightly as you pull the distributor out. The rotor of the HEI will rotate the opposite way as you push it in. Make an allowance for this. Last tip - look closely at the bottom of the hEI shaft. First you will see the gear and the teeth. The angle of these teeth is what causes the rotor to rotate as it slides into a similar gear inside the motor. Second - Look closely at the bottom of the gear. You will see a cross shaft inside the gear. This MUST fit inside a slot inside the motor. If the shaft & slot do not align, the new distributor will not drop all the way in place.
