The tabs allow the torque converter to drive the pump in the transmission. If they're broken off the pump won't work and, needless to say, neither will the transmission. If the notches in the torque converter aren't lined up with the tabs in the pump when the trans is bolted to the engine they will be broken from the pressure of trying to bolt everything together..............I won't go into how I learned this the hard way a long time ago.
