Ok since everyone told you the basics I'll tell you why the Rockcrusher got
its name. It has the coolest sound in the world, it sounds something like a
bad throw-out bearing (cann't think of any other sound right now) and has a
whine to it, it is because of the sharp cut teeth in the casing. I would
jump all over it for $400 if it is the real deal, if not it would still be
worth $350-$700, just depends on the condition. As for the 396, I've got
one in my car (69 vintage) and I love it, it is very dependable, its got
plenty of spunk (375 ponies), it likes to rev, and has never let me down. I
have seen a guy take one and run high 11s consistantly with plenty of tuning
and a lightened car ('glass front end, plus a few other things.... say like
an interior) I also know a guy that dirttracks with one and he runs real
good in the pack. Personally if it is a 67-below vintage I wouldn't want it
the rear of the cam has to have an oil groove and they had a tendancy of not
getting sufficient oil flow to the top end (at least what I have heard, plus
thats at high rpm) just don't like to have the thought of something that can
fail me, I go for function and reliability, thats why I'm always screwing
around with old cars. Ok nuff said.
