In December I registered my '71 Chevelle and bought personalized
plates. (SS 454) At that time they looked up the SS 454 in their computer
to see if it is available and it was so I gave them the $107. Actually gave
them much more than that because in Minnesota they force you to first buy a
regular license plate before you can buy the personalized plate. Yesterday
I received a letter from the motor vehicles dept of MN telling me that my
personalized plate application is rejected due to the SS 454 being issued
already on a standard, regular plate and my $107 will be refunded in 4-8
weeks. If I want to reapply, I must go back to the motor vehicle testing
station and start all over. I called them again this morning and asked if
there is a way to check for the plates I want and guaranty that I have it
locked in so I do not have to go through this all over again in 30 days and
of course there is not. The day you pay your fee and apply for the plate in
no way locks you in. When your application gets to and is processed at the
main office in 4-8 weeks, if someone else has applied for that plate and
there paperwork gets there first, your screwed. What a policy! The woman
on the phone then wanted to go through some ideas I have for the
personalized plate and I mostly want combinations of the 71 SS 454 and as
soon as I said that she told me that they will most likely reject any
combinations of letters and numbers because of the possibility they could
or can be issued on a standard license plate. Of course through all my
dealings with these unique people that work at the motor vehicle dept, you
get the attitude of "I could care less that you are having this problem and
have many calls to handle so hurry up" I guess I will have to come up with
another idea for a personalized plate if I still want it.

This was like a skit on Saturday Night Live, "thank you for your check, yes
that personalized plate is available but will probably be rejected in 4-8
weeks and you may never be able to get a plate that you want*
Muhahahaha :)
