It absolutely depends on which you plan to spend more on. An engine, or paint. As has been discussed here in other threads, you can easily spend $5-10,000 on paint. The same could be said of an engine, depending on how nuts you are. True, you can get a cheap/inexpensive paint job, but if you are preparing a car for something better than what came from the factory, you are likely going to be shelling out some serious dough. especially if you have any body work that needs doing, rust repair, etc. A good body and chassis is worth more to me than a nice mechanical car in a crap body/paint setup. That being said, I myself bought what was available which was the opposite. Now my wallet is getting thinner due to cosmetics.
