Rich,
Thanks for the idea. After talking with Ausley's yesterday (they want
$209 w/o shipping) & the Bumper Boyz today (they want $295 for one w/o
shipping), I'm inclined to look at one of Ausley's at Carlisle to see
what they look like & then decide from there.
I suppose I could buy one from Ausley's and then think about getting my
original one chromed somewhere down the road once it is off the car and a
repro one on it....

donnie,

I found a piece of the build sheet in my 69 under the rear seat. another
piece was found behind a kick panel, but it was undecipherable. I found
2
complete broadcast sheets in my cousins Cuda. I wish I had complete ones
for
my 69 & 70, that would make my day.

Well if any one on this list knows that there car was built in Canada, as
mine was, you may request a copy of the build sheet that was for your
car, as
they kept Records of that stuff, un like the good ole US of A, just need
the
numbers from the vin , and your good to go. the Adress for it is General

I need a consensus here. What gear ratios is everyone running. I need
to
put a new ring & pinion in my 70. It now has 4.10's. I was thinking of
dropping it down to 3.73 simply for the fact that I'm not going to be
racing
it anymore, and plan on doing some more highway use with it. i do drive
it
down to Maryland from here in Jersey on occasions. I was also tossing
around
the idea of putting a 700R4 in it to replace the TH400 in it now. I'd
appreciate any info from anyone running a 454/700R4/3.73 combo.

A friend of mine got two build sheets out of his '70 Chevelle SS
convertible. One was for his car, the other was for the next car in the
build sequence (I guess the one right behind his on the assembly line)!
If
I recall, I think the other one might even be a Monte VIN. Were they
built
on the same assembly line?

My 68 El Camino had a 468"/700R4/4.10 combo with 27.7" tall rear tires.
If I
would've had it to do over again,I would not run a 4.10 with that trans &
engine; way too much gear. My suggestion would be a 3.55 or 3.31. Even
with
a 3.31,you will have plenty of punch with the big block & 700R4. If you
stay
with the TH400,I would go with the 3.55's and a tall rear tire.

With that motor a 3.31 & 700R4 will boil the tires off & be great
on the highway.

anyvehicle
built here no matter where shipped cause thats irelivant to the fact that

I agre with clint. Behind the torque of a big block 3.31 or 3.55 will
work nicely, especially with an OD. I have a s/b with 700r4 and 3.31,
my seat of the pants feeling is for my combo 3.55 would be better.
Question though, if you drop lower than the 3.73, will you need a new
carrier?

Hey Tom
I will have to agree with everyone that either a 3.31 or 3.55 gear would
be great. Right now you could do the gears and then do the trans down the
road. Valid point was brought up, what series carrier do you have now? If
you are going to get the 3.31's you better start looking now as noone
makes them new, you gotta reuse a GM set.
On the note of the 700. Mom's car has 3.55's and just loves to cruise
with
the torque of the big block. Although we were all set to put a 3.31 in it
when we found out the housing was an early one. So were just gonna save
it
for the 65 and stick with the gears she has now.
We can talk about this more at the next meeting if ya want...
later

Since we're on the subject, what do you guys suggest for a 396/4 speed
combo? I was thinking 3.31 or 3.55. I would like to be able to drive on
the highway for long distances occasionally.
Thanks,

Yes,you will need a new carrier,Rick. That's probably the main reason I
never switched to 3.55's.

No you wouldnt as long as stay in the 3 series, i just went through it my
self this past year i put back the original gear set that was in there
when
built which was 3.36.1 ratio was 373 ratio it has a m21, and going down
the
highway with 373 was tuff i would be winding the motor out more then i
liked
to to get to a cruisin speed thats why i went with the original i would
have liked the 342 ratio but i couldnt get it cause i have a 10bolt rear

if anyone at all was wondering, right now with the 4.10's & TH400 & 28"
tires, the car turns 3700 RPMs at 80 mph. I still can't believe that it
gets
15 mpg at that rate either. I was thinking I could improve that a little
more and still do 100' burnouts :) Since like I said it does make a lot
of
road trips that are in excess of 100 miles. I also don't feel like
ordering
a new carrier, thats why I said 3.73. I also won't use a set of used
gears,
thats why I have to change them in the first place. The 4.10's in it are
used and whines so loud its not funny. I guess that's what I get for
buying
a done rear.

Hi,
For 12 bolt C axle
I know that Richmond makes two different sets of 3,73's one for the 3
series
carrier and one for the 4 series carrier.
They also make 4,88 4,56 4,10 3,90 to fit the 3 series carrier
I don't think that you can go lower than 3,73 with the 4 series carrier.
I installed this gears last summer behind a small block and a Muncie,
it's
a little bit short on the top end but it should be ok behind your
possible
0,70 ratio on 4th gear which would make it a 2,61

Every 4-series gear I ever heard had a pretty good whine. I think that's
pretty normal. Especially the 4.30:1 F**d I once had under a '70 M*****g
(when I was still over on the dark side).

OK here's the old hot rodder's take on rear axle ratios and trannys. Keep
the TH-400 and get a 3.73 gear set. Why not do the four speed?. You could
get your 400 rebuilt and shift kitted twice before you could pay for the
700....granted the 700 is a very good tranny, but it may be more
expensive
in the long run if you race it much. I think it's best to be at or less
than 3K when cruising the highways. The 3.42 10 bolt is what all the
G-body
guys strive for, but If I could change my 3.08 tomorrow, I'd go 3.73. I
drive the freeways about 40 miles a day and cruising at 80 runs 3k on the
tach. Mileage? Who cares, I didn't buy my car to get good mileage, that's
what "TowRopers" are for....:)
