Matt, The 396 has gobs of low end torque and for normal, everyday driving I haven't found the higher gear to be detrimental at all. I ran a 2.79 gear for about 11 years and only went to the "lower" 3.07's because I wanted a 67 rear end again (previous was a wider 68> rear) and that's what I happen to find first. I have a wide ratio Muncie (2.52 1st gear) which helps a bit as well. I'm looking at going to a 700R4 for a couple of reasons. (1) I'm getting lazy and would like to be able to drink a cup of coffee on the way to work :*). (2) Since 9/11 it takes anywhere from 20-40 minutes to get on the army base I work at due to security checks and the constant stop-start in a two block long line is getting old fast. (3) I run about 3000 rpm at 75 now and with the overdrive I can knock that down to around 2000/2100 range for better mileage and less wear and tear on the engine. I generally make three or four fairly long trips a year to car shows from 150 miles to 800+ miles each way and I could use the mileage.
