I have a 2.73 rear behind my small block and 700R4, and I can tell I
need more. I do get about 24 mpg cruising on the highway, but I have
been planning to upgrade to a mid-3 series gear as well. 3.31 is a 20%
increase for me and was likely what I was thinking of as this get very
close to the "optimal" factor I have seen where they say divide 10 by
first gear ratio and you have a good rear ratio (10/3.06=3.27). But
with the large step between first (3.06) and second (1.63) on the 700R4,
it might be better to go to the high end of the scale:

3.06*2.73= 8.35
3.06*3.31=10.13
3.06*3.55=10.86
3.06*3.73=11.41
3.06*4.11=12.58

Also, I assume I need a new carrier. I thought that the 12 bolt mid
range carrier took 3.07 to 3.90 gears, but I have also seen it listed as
3.73 and below, and 3.73 and up, so there seems to be confusion out
there...
