Herb, That is a good point; but don't stop there. I had my pick-up die on me from a faulty alternator connection.

Herb, same thing happened to me with my '61 Vette. It turned out to be a loose ground in the engine bay. You didn't say if you checked for spark when you pulled the #1 plug. I don't think the ignition switch is at fault. It does turn the engine over. So your getting power to the engine. Check for a loose coil wire or the hot lead to the the starter. I would look for a faulty ground first. Remember these are glass bodies. When we bought our first home my wife said to me," OK, we have a new home, what are we going to sit on?" Guess where the money came from to furnish the house? Sure miss that '61.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Ignition woes (Vette, kinda long)

Hi everyone,

This is about my Vette, hopefully someone will have an idea...

About a week ago my wife and I drove the Vette to visit her sister.  Round trip was about 260 miles.  It ran just fine all the way there and all the way home.  Once we were home, I pulled up to the driveway so my wife could move her truck out of the way (the Vette sleeps inside the garage).  As she was getting out, the engine sputtered and died.  I turned the key and it cranked a little longer than normal but finally started back up.  It sounded a little rougher but it was running.  I pulled it into the garage and shut it off.

Yesterday I fiddled around with it and got it running by slowly moving the distributor until it fired.  It seemed to be running ok, I even went and got gas.  Sure enough, the movers show up this morning and I go to move the Vette and the damn thing won't start!  It'll turn over forever but it just won't start.  I pulled the #1 plug and checked my timing about a dozen times, I pulled the valve covers and the valve train appears to be working properly, I even went to Autozone and got another distributor just to see if that was the problem, no dice.

This is really irritating considering it was running just fine before the little road trip!

The only other thing I can think of is the ignition switch is bad.  I installed a new one a few years back for some reason (I still have the original).  Even if the ignition switch was bad that wouldn't explain why it died the way it did.

Am I missing something?  Any suggestions?

Thanks guys (and gal)...
