You have to negotiate and settle for a lesser amount to retain your vehicle and your title. I did that with an old motorcycle once. I got knocked over by a drunk and the bike was damaged cosmetically (I was damaged a bit more than cosmetically). The bike was easily repaired but because of its age and book value it was totalled. I settled for less than full value, kept it and repaired it myself. You always have the option to keep your vehicle. The insurance industry has the option of how much they will pay. Once it's declared a total and you turn your title over to them it's gone. Bill Vander Werf "Kelly C.
