It depends on where the pad is coming from. I am putting one in my own El Camino, and I would not call it "a solid lump of badly trimmed badly designed rubber". It is correctly (allegedly) Madrid grained vinyl wrapped over foam, with a metal backing just like the original. Nothing about it is rubber nor badly designed or trimmed. The only reason I said "allegedly" is because my El Camino is 300 miles away and I am not looking at the grain side-by-side. However, it's a very nice looking dash pad. Where did you see the one you described? Where did it come from? How long ago? Anyway, some of this is a matter of individual taste, and there may be differences depending on the manufacturer and when it was made. One bad dash pad doesn't mean they are all bad. Believe me, if it looked like what you described, I wouldn't be putting it on my car.
