Craig,
     Depending on the other components of the motor/drivetrain I would think 
600-700 would give the best driving characteristics.  If you don't have a carb 
prices increase along with the size.  My original 454 street motor worked best 
with a 700 dp(mechanical secondaries).  Car ran 12 flat @112.
