An acquaintance recently converted his '70 GTO from a
thermal clutch fan to a flex fan to help with an
overheating problem he was having when stopped or moving
slowly in traffic, and it worked.

However, with a flex fan it's critical that the blades
be examined on a regular basis. I had a flex fan with
stainless steel blades installed on a V-6 daily driver
and around 50K miles one blade broke off (fortunately
causing no damage) and several others were badly
fatigued and cracked around the rivets. Another
acquaintance had the flex fan on his '69 Camaro SS 396
throw a blade just *seconds* after he'd been under the
hood making some engine adjustments. Truly a close call.

My preference is a 7-blade OEM-style fan with a thermal
clutch and fan shroud for a car that gets driven often.
Any overheating problems I've had in the past have been
traced to problems other than the fan.
