Larry,

If you want a trick setup, I like the March myself and others like Zoops.  A matter of taste I suppose.  I'd check March out at http://www.marchperf.com/contents.html#Serpentine for BB Chevy stuff.  I bought the 23050 kit and it uses a long water pump, which I already had, and a 71 Impala 454 p/s pump.  I also like the symmetry of the design - alternator on the passenger side and p/s on the drivers side.  I think I'm going to put A/C (Vintage Air) on this summer and March sent me the part numbers to "upgrade" the 23050 kit to a 23070 kit that would include the A/C brackets and idler.  It puts the A/C on the drivers side so the hoses will be a bit longer but at least I don't have to buy an entirely new setup.

They have a "high mount" kit, 20760/1/2/3 (depending on p/s type) but it wouldn't fit with my fuel injection and looks to cramped for me.  It doesn't say whether it's for a long or short pump though.

If I had it to do over again (from scratch), I'd get the 20511/16 kit for reverse rotation water pump and is a true one-belt serpentine setup.  It's designed as an A/C setup from the start so you'd have to invest in the compressor up front or at least an old core that the pulley still turned on.  Again, they don't specify long or short pump but they do recommend one kit over another if you use the Edelbrock #8854 or #8864 water pumps which happen to be short pumps according to the Edelbrock catalog.

Any way you go, March/Zoops/etc. and long/short pump be prepared to make a few trips to parts stores to get the correct length belt(s).  None of the recommended belt lengths in the instructions or their web site fit.  Best bet is to start with what they suggest but tell the counterperson you'll probably be back.  And, check to see if they stock belts probably 2" either way and what increments they have.  I have a saga of my installation at http://www.dalesplace.com/march/march_page_1.htm complete with photos and problems/fixes.  It might help.

Bottom line, in my case with the long pump in a short pump designed car, there is not enough room to put a clutch fan in there.

dale:
well i got a question for you. if you were me would you go short or long pump? i have the short pump BB power steering assembly, short water pump (aluminum) but i don't have the brackets yet for the alternator or do i know what ac unit i will be using.. may go to vintage air? i will be using tall valve covers too as I'm using roller rockers. also I'm not sure what fan to use. also has anyone in here ever used aluminum heads with cast iron exhaust manifolds? i under stand  someone (sanderson ?) makes some real nice cast manifolds? the reason for cast over headers is the factory cruise control for a 65 sets down on the A arm and may interfere with headers.
                                                      thanks,
