Regardless if the crank snout is drilled or not, that bolt shouldn't be used.  It's a fine thread and can strip easily.  Best to get the right tool for job.  Better to get a crankshaft socket and use a 1/2" breaker bar.  Besides, with the socket you can turn the engine both ways if needed.

What year block? I think only the early blocks weren't drilled in the crank. 65 and older?
