If you shorten them, do it from the distributor end, NOT
the spark plug end. A good set of wire crimp pliers will have a place for
plug wire crimping. Many auto parts stores sell just the distributor ends
and boots - make sure you get the right kind, i.e., HEI type connections or
standard distributor type connections.

It's an Adobe file and tells you how to do the distributor ends. Get some
WD40 or silicone spray and pull the dist boot back until you get the right
length then make your cut. Remember you should strip about 5/8" of
insulation off the wire and you need a bit of length to work with so start a
little bit long until you get the hang of it.

Have a question, may seem dumb but what the hay. I have installed new spark plug wires on my Chevelle and the are way to long . I want to shorten them, how difficult is it to do and and what exactly do you have to do ?
