The Vin will be stamped on the pad on the passenger side of the block, where the head meets the block, it will have a build date that will look like this, T1210ED this means T=Tonawanda engine plant 12=Built in December, 10=Tenth day, ED=325hp, these last letters could be ED,EH,EK,EM,EF,EJ,EL,EN,EG, These will tell the story of what hp/trans combo, and if this was a Holley equipped car there will be a H after them.
the VIN number will be stamped on this pad also, the build date of the engine must be befor the build date of the car, you will find that date on the cowl tag, for example 12C 12=December C=third week, Kyle posted that the Vin is behind the distributor befor the bellhousing, that is wrong, you will find the block casting numbers there, these numbers will also tell a story. And heads are not vin specific, but casting numbers and casting dates will help put the puzzle together. If it were me, and this guy is as knowledgeable as you say, he should have no problem showing you all the casting numbers block/heads Vin numbers/casting dates and you should be able to make an educated decision, this goes all the way down to the numbers cast into the exhaust manifolds, you can determine if they belonged to say a 66 396, I have a numbers matching 66SS, and feel free to e-mail me off list if you have any specific questions Rocky Hill --- Krister Meister <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Where can I find the VIN # on the block of a '66 396 > in order to compare it > to the VIN on the car.
