I have to doubt there is much info out there on this, (I could be wrong)
so I will contribute what little I know to help out.
If I am not mistaken, the 2 speed power-glide was a favorite tranny by
some type of racing in the 60's and early 70's? I don't know much about
racing so the guys that do can correct me. But I understand these
trannys were very strong and had good gear ratios for racing.
These trannys were put in cars mostly in the 1950's. This was before
they had stop lights every 10 feet in the city, gas was cheap, and so
were cars. It was designed when automatics were in their infancy having
only been invented a few short years before these came out.
The auto tranny's of the 60's were improved and mostly 3 speeds. When
gas shortages happened in 1974 (still doubtful it was for real) gas
prices doubled and tripled and didn't go back to near the 35 cent a
gallon ( and less ) it once was.
Environmentalists put pressure on the government to reduce pollution.
While things had already started before that a little in some places,
the 1973 car year seemed to be the distinct line of change and started
the era of pollution control devices. This all came together to kill the
muscle car of that era. This is why you will see books covering up to
and including 72, but almost never 73.
But it also helped to improve things in that we got better ignition
systems, fuel injection, and much more efficient engines that are just
now starting to crank out the horse power of yesteryear through
technology. If you ever happen to stand behind one of these classic cars
and smell the exhaust as it goes by, and compare that to new cars... You
know that things probably happened for the best.
Oh yeah, the auto trannys that are automatic with overdrives. Overdrive
= the engine turns over less than once for every rotation of the rear
wheel. There are different ratios of overdrive gears available. These
are a good thing and many guys are also putting these in their Chevelles
to take advantage of new technology in a classic muscle car.
While they may be able to put more horsepower into today's engine. They
still can't match the style and good looks of the classics of the 60's &
early 70's. A time when freedom and factory horsepower were pushed to
new limits .... Those were the days ...until they came to a screeching
halt.

Yup, floor it, hold it down, shift at 6400. :-) Let off at the 1/4
mile marker.
