Steve,
I have limited experience, but I do have some, and have been
doing a lot of research.
First, is that a 400 small block? I have heard both good and bad about
that block if so. Make sure it don't have cooling problems.
If it's a Big Block 402 (sometimes called 396 -same block) (also called
400 from around 1970)...it may be better. This does get very confusing.
Make sure you know what you are getting. The Big Block 402 (396/400) I
have heard is a good Engine and I have one that will be rebuilt soon.
Exactly WHICH 4 speed is in that car? Did he tell you? That could make a
difference in value.
Is the rear end a 10 bolt or 12 bolt? Could make a difference in value.
Not that a 10 bolt is bad...depending on your intentions for the car.
Get under the car and look for rust on the floor boards and look in the
trunk real well. If it has rust, that doesn't mean it's a "don't buy it"
situation...unless you don't like working on cars. It may just be a
bargaining point on price. Just plan on going to welding school at night
for 6-8 weeks and buying a welder, or be prepared to pay someone else to
do it.
As someone else already pointed out. Half the fun is fixing these cars
with your own hands .(and money)..the way you want it.
Overall, that price sounds pretty close to fair from the way you
described it though....from my limited experience. Know what you are
getting for sure and then decide to accept it, and then never look back
and wonder if you paid too much. Just look forward to the good times
ahead.
Steve

Does any one have a idea what is a fair price for this car and what I
should be looking for. I am new to this. The vehicle is in decent
condition, needing some minor body work, few trim pieces and new paint.
It has a recently rebuilt 400 cubic inch engine with a 650
Holly, posi, headers, alumnium wheels and 4 speed. The engine has around
4,000 miles on it after the rebuild which was done by a professional.
The interior needs new seat covers and is in fair condition. It is not a
rally sport or SS version. He is asking $4,500 or best
offer.Thanks,Steve
