The Z-16 conv. myth has been circulating for along time. I veiw it the same as Big Foot. They my have fabed up one in the engineering/reaserch dept. just like they did a 4 wheel drive El-Camino. but the only thing the 4X4 El-Camino saw was the big blue torch. That's the same car that was at a SSC from last month's issue and they promised an article.  Of course now there seems to be, (Quote) "216 SS models in 1965 with the Z/16 option..." according to the owner.  In the last issue they reported that the owner did extensive research on the Internet on the one (reportedly) convertible made.  I've done extensive searching on the Internet and I've yet to find anything about it.  One gentleman at TC claims to have owned it and another says he rode in it.  It was reported to be a triple gold - and a gold color that wasn't offered on 65 Chevelles at that.   I particularly like the last sentence of the article, "There is no pretense made that this car is the original..."  I'm sure the license plate ~1965Z16~ doesn't add to the pretense.  Some young enthusiast will see it and in 5 or 10 years will swear  he saw the one and only Z16 convertible.  It is a gorgeous car with attention to detail well carried out.   By "brackets" do you mean the Bumper Guards?  I'm sure those were an option on all 65 Chevelles as they were in later years.  The rear panel (as stated in the article) was done that way to make way for the 396 emblem and was unique to the Z16. This article also leaves me wondering about a couple things. First, were the brackets on the bumper a Z-16 only option, and what are they called, as I'm sure "bumper brackets" is not correct.
