Thanks for the tip, Dan. Do I have to set it with or without vacuum advance?
Another question. I have the idea that it runs way to lean. If I block the
air intake with my hand for about 90% it runs much better. I have tried to
adjust it with the screw on the carb, but it doesn't seem to make any
difference. Any suggestions?

I have a straight 6 in my 65 Malibu. When I first got it, from a stand
still, it would stumble on its face and stall if the accelerator were used
with any force. I found that the timing was set at 4 degrees BTDC. In my
manual it calls for 8 degrees BTDC. That might get you on the right track.
