Disconnect and plug the hose that connects to the vacuum advance canister when setting ignition timing.
Yes, it definitely sounds like you're running lean. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? I don't know how expensive vacuum hose is for you but you might want to consider fresh hoses. If the throttle blade is open too far the idle mixture screw will have little or no effect, so make sure the blade's nearly closed at idle. Brad O. > Thanks for the tip, Dan.
