Not sure this applies to a '70 but..... When the dash lights go out on a
modern GM its an indication that the running lights are also out. They are
on the same circuit. The reasoning goes something like "you may never notice
that the taillights are out while you're driving but you will notice that
the dash lites are out". If this holds then one of your tail light sockets
might be at fault.
