Subject: [Chevelle-List] Which Spal
Pusher Fan for 67 SS= back to the original question
I appreciate the answers below. However, I removed the flex fan and put in
a clutch fan and new aluminum radiator, and new high performance water pump.
Yes, the fan is properly within shroud area. Guess my question was not
understood.
I was having a problem previously with the car going from 180 degrees on
the highway to over 235 when at idle. I had the old Harrison radiator and
original water pump.
Now the cooling system stays at 180 at highway and will eventually creep
up, after 30 minutes, to around 210. It stays within 210 degrees. This is an
ok figure I am told for a 396 Big Block.
I want to supplement my cooling system with a SPAL pusher fan that will
automatically come on at 200 degrees, cool down the system and turn off at 185
degrees.
Again, my only question is what SPAL radiator, e.g, the SPAL 16 inch pusher
fan with 1920 CFM and 17.5 amps, or the SPAL 16 inch pusher with 2360 CFM and
21.6 amps.
Will the original alternator handle either one of these fans ? Or, will I
need to upgrade the alternator.
Thanks,
Ken McDee

Oh yeah.
Clutch fan. It'll sit in traffic without trouble. On a super hot day it'll
creep up to 190 if I leave it idling with the AC on - like in a
bumpertobumper traffic jam. I've been real pleased with it. Only complaint
is no overflow can so I bought a nifty chrome billet alum one from Weapon-R
that I'm gonna try to install this weekend.

Allot depends on motor combination and age of motor, Aluminum
heads, wild cam etc.... . Craig your are a lucky man to have a big
block hold that temp with copper rad... I wasn't able to do it. So I went
Alum. No problems since. Do you have a clutch
fan?
My system
has a four core copper rad with 7 blade fan. 180 all the
time.
take the clutch fan off and get a flex fan. My car idles in
traffic at 180 190 on a 105 deg day and I have to put thermostat
in to warm up enough for the blower .highway temp
160.

I have upgraded my cooling system with a new aluminum
radiator, water pump, fan clutch and shroud. Has gone from 230 plus
at idle to a steady 210 with 180 degrees on the road.
I want to add a Spal Pusher fan. My question is which one ?
Do I go with the Spal 16 inch pushing 1920 CFM with 17.4 amps, or
go with the
Spal 16 inch pushing 2360 CFM at 21.6 amps.
I have the original alternator in the 67 Chevelle SS. I do not
have a stereo, AC, or power supplies. Will I have to upgrade the
alternator.
Note: We conducted a test. With the 67 SS idling for 30
minutes it went up to
210 but stayed there. We used a floor fan pusing air through the
radiator and it dropped to 185 degrees.
Comments please.
