The holes would definitely be noticeable, but you could fill them (if you have enough patience). I think on the extra Monte dash that I have, the holes are approximately 3/8" in diameter, the metal panel was held in place by some "tabs" that reached through these holes and were spot welded to the back of the woodgrain insert. I think the best way to make that dash look the best in your Chevelle would be to paint the woodgrain insert with a black wrinkle finish paint. I've wanted to try painting the woodgrain on my extra one with black "Hammertone" paint, but I haven't gotten a chance to do it yet.
