My .02   If  you go the  full gambit, install of tall spindles/tubular upper arms/ polly bushings /big sway bars/ boxed adjustable rear  control arms/  guick ratio box/ sticky tires/big brakes . This combo is proven to exhibit great handeling both in real world and skid pad test.  But  I tend to agree with your thought. You need  good bushings, disk brakes (GM's work well) sport springs and shocks and a fast ratio box.
