You want the lowest range that will still be higher than the resistance
measured.  This gives you the the most accurate reading.

In an analog meter, on a higher range, the needle will swing over so far to
zero as to be indistinguishable from it.

Most digital meters are autoranging -- they only have an ohms setting and
will pick the lowest range to give a "mid-scale" reading.

On digital meters where you have to set the range, start low and work up
until it no longer displays "OV".  (You'd want to do the opposite with
voltage and current -- start high and work down.)

Be sure to disconnect one end of the wire from the circuit, or you'll be
reading multiple paths, which will affect the displayed value.
