I guess I hold a little different view than most and I'm one that took a SS car and modified it quite a bit. I have friends (?) on this list and at Team Chevelle that are downright numbers matching, correct finish on parts and whether a particular bolt has a star washer or flat washer types of owners. Others, like myself, enjoy driving what we have and don't try to make it into something it isn't. Think about it, you see two Chevelles almost identical at a car show or parking lot. One with SS badging and one without; you're (usually) drawn to the "SS" car. Finding out it isn't a SS causes you to pause for just an instant before you start enjoying the car for what it is, someone's personal tastes.
Personally, I have no qualms about striping, hoods, wheels, etc. but don't like to see "Super Sport" or "SS" on cars that weren't. I may put my SS coupe hood on my Elky someday, maybe even a big block and 12-bolt rear end but that doesn't make it a "Super Sport" (aside from the fact there was no 67 SS El Camino). Majority say it's fine as long as you don't try to pass it off as a clone. IMHO, with incorrect badging, you're doing that very thing every time someone looks at the car. You may sell the car some day and the buyer KNOWS it's not a SS car but then they sell it and say, "Gee, I don't know if it is or not. Guy I bought it from said it was." Worse yet, they sell it to someone who doesn't know the difference and they wind up getting burnt or pass along bad info to others so they now become confused. "SS" is becoming too generic and I hate to see that happen; like making "Xerox" copies on a Kodak photocopier or people working for Pepsi taking a "Coke" break. To me, the "SS" is a heritage, not just a select group of parts and options that anyone can build in their driveway. The SS mystique always sells though, that's why you see SS jacks and SS radios on eBay and I always think to myself, "Houston, we have a moron." There are plenty of very nice Malibu's out there and more "SS" cars than Chevrolet ever built. Be proud of what you have. A nicely done car is just that, nicely done.
