Rocky,
My comment wasn't meant in a technical sense like what you meant. I
know that to some people that an SS is a totally different car than a
Malibu.
To me, they are both Chevelles. An SS has different markings and some
different numbers on the cowl tag, VIN & build sheet. They are basically the
same car as a Malibu with a few different markings and maybe a different
engine and rear end. True they are more valuable, but value is only what
someone is willing to pay for something.
I can make my 69 an EXACT clone and nobody would ever know the difference
...if I wanted, by putting the right parts on it. Does that make it any more
special? Only because it would bring more on the market when I sold it
(which I won't do).
It won't make it any faster, maybe not make it look any better .....although
that's where the nicer looking hood may make a difference, won't make it any
safer, or handle any better etc.
In fact, since I am modifying my Malibu with tall spindles & disc brakes,
putting in a highly modified 12 bolt, a 396/402 with some special stuff in
it, and other handling items not available from the factory back then, in MY
opinion, it will be "better" than a factory SS. That's what I chose to do
instead of making it a clone. I think I have taken on the challenge to make
it perform and look even better than a factory SS. But then again, not
everyone will agree with me and I know it.
To me, a car is a collection of parts from different manufacturers, ordered
by specification and put together by a major corporation and it's people. I
don't put an SS on the high pedestal that some people do. However, I do
think that the Chevelle (and other muscle cars) in general is one of the
better things ever to come out of American Car manufacturers for American
consumers. It was one of the few times when they made a car to what the
customer demand was and not what they chose to make or felt they should, or
were forced to make by gov't regulations like today.
This is just my opinion. I know others feel differently, and I respect that.

Steve,
I don't know where you got your info, but 66-67-68 SS
cars were not an option, they were seperate models
specified by the VIN, and didn't become an option
until 69.
