That's correct, the 700R4 became the 4L60 then the 4L60-E when the shifting was done electronically. If you go with a 700 be sure to get one that was made after 1987. These are a lot stronger internally. Or get the weak parts upgraded. I'm going with a 200R4 for my '66. I have a really good article from Car Craft on GM tran's. If you would like a copy send me your E-mail address and I'll send it to you. It's not about installing one but more on the line of which is the better one and why. Very interesting.
