Jason, You might want to consider putting a inline 6 back in. I don't know how easy it would be to find a 194 or 230 but 250's are around and reasonable. I know a guy here in VA who has two he wants to sell for $250. You could then build a dependable engine to get you going and later, go with add-ons; headers, four barrel card, roller rockers, etc. As for the tyranny, a rebuild might serve your purpose for know.
