For another reference, my 67 Elky has a standard 327/275 with a .030
rebuild overbore (331cid now), TH350 and 3.31 gears. With the old
Q-Jet, it got 15-17 on the highway at 70/75 and around 10-12 in
town...but that's in a medium sized town (80K) without much in the way
of stop and go traffic like a metropolitan area or the LA freeways. I
replaced the Q-Jet with an Edelbrock 1401 and Performer intake but
mileage stayed about the same. If you're looking to be "period
correct", stick with a pre 69 engine for the short pump and associated
brackets/pullies/etc. If very much of your driving is highway speed an
overdrive is the way to go, be in a 700R4 or a 200-4R and both are about
the same price initially. Gears are about the same - 700R4 is
3.06/1.63/1.00/.70 and the 200-4R is 2.74/1.57/1.00/.67.
